There is a beautiful symbiosis in the way elders shape community. In so many traditions movement, craft, and storytelling aren’t just hobbies - they are the lifeline of the culture passed down hand to hand. These stories have a way of molding us, leaving a thumbprint of love, commitment, and discipline that spans across generations. The highest honor is when a person - a child, growing into adulthood, and eventually becoming an elder themselves - gets to step into the lineage and keep it alive. It’s a spectacular way of existing, and something so many people naturally aspire for.
These leaders are shining beacons, continuously lighting the way and uplifiting the communities we belong to. We love them deeply, and we showcase that love in a multitude of ways. Most amazingly, we find that gift through movement—and in The Phoenix Dance Group’s case, a lifelong commitment to dance.
The Phoenix Dance Group are cultural icons to say the least. They are the pulse of Chinatown, NY, running through mutliple generations. Discipline becomes them. Through their discipline they find joy and longevity, giving back to their larger community in more ways than we can imagine. It is an honor to witness history, and to see how their impact spans lifetimes, communities, and cultures. Dancing wherever they can find the time and space, they show us what it means to truly live - proving that a commitment to craft is what culture is about. Without The Phoenix Dance Group, Chinatown would not be the powerful force it is today. Their legacy will continue to inspire and drive beautiful culture, forever.
